Dame Julian of Norwich

_Julian of Norwich, along with Emily Dickinson are among my two favourite mystics. Emily Dickinson is much more of a secular mystic while Julian remains a traditional one. She has never been formally canonized by the Roman church but her famous saying that “all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well” is among the best known in the English language. Julian was certainly no Pollyanna - she knew suffering.

In the icon picture above there is a hazelnut in her hand. In one of her shewings (how she referred to her visions), she saw a small hazelnut in her hand and heard the words. “This is all there is.” The hazelnut, which represents everything we can see and touch, has three characteristics: God made it, God loves it and God keeps it. God is therefore, Maker, Lover and Keeper of all.

    My Pensées

The title of this blog is an allusion to the famous work of Blaise Pascal.  This blog represents the variety of my interests and thoughts on any given day and are  strung together, like Pascal's Pensees, in no particular order. I work in the field of mental health,  education, and human rights. I write and am a human rights advocate. I enjoy poetry, jazz, spirituality, politics and a potpourri of other interests that you will see reflected in this blog.
